Wedding Horseshoe

No one is completely sure about the origins of the lucky horseshoe. The association between horseshoes and luck dates to pre-Christian history, at least. Iron and steel in general have long been believed to hold supernatural powers, and of course, horseshoes are usually made of iron or steel. The Greeks used horseshoes as a representation of the crescent moon, which for them was a symbol of fertility.

Legend holds that in the 10th century, St. Dunstan, who was a blacksmith by trade, was approached by a man of cloven hoof who wanted a iron shoe made to fit his feet. The Saint, recognizing the man as Lucifer, shackled him to the wall and made the shoeing job so painful that Lucifer begged for mercy, and vowed never to enter the home a Christian. The homes would be marked by a horseshoe hung above the door.

Given the connections to good luck, fertility, and protection from evil, it is no surprise that brides have long received a horseshoe for luck on their wedding day. This tradition is fairly common in England and Ireland, although the “horseshoe” today is usually made of porcelain or fabric.

We here at Horseshues.com believe that in order to be a horseshoe with benefits, it must have once been nailed to the hoof of a real live horse. Modern substitutions just won’t do.

With the divorce rate already running at 50% in the USA, this no time to be toying with false talisman. If you are giving the gift of luck for a wedding, don’t waste your time with false promises. Only a horseshoe that was once worn by a real horse will do.

The Wedding Shue is a real horseshoe, reclaimed from a horse, then cleaned, hand painted, and decorated. Personalization for the lucky couple is free. This is one gift they won’t want to return.
